The Townhouse Hotel’s Fair Trade Tourism certification rewards our  ‘Dare to Care’ spirit

We are thrilled to announce that in September 2015 Townhouse Hotel was awarded official Fair Trade Tourism certification!

Fair Trade Tourism is a non-profit organisation that recognises and promotes sustainable and responsible tourism and hospitality enterprises on our continent.

This prestigious certification rewards many years of Townhouse’s dedication to delivering great hoteling to our guests, but hoteling that’s also critically mindful of our responsibility to grow, preserve and enrich the environments, communities, heritage and people that make our hotel and this city such a special tourism destination.

An extensive independent audit of our operation tested us against criteria that examined every facet of our hotel. Among them, our business ethics; how we mitigate our impact on the environment; how we support local entrepreneurs, help to uplift local communities; even the part we play in celebrating of our city’s heritage and diverse culture. Perhaps most important, in an industry dedicated to people, it noted how we look after and benefit the lives of some 100 Townhouse personnel who are the heart and soul of our business.

This certification process recognised many things both visible and ‘unsung’. For instance, our Conference Centre benefits the Green Pop Initiative with a percentage of every delegate’s fee going to community tree-planting. Our staff volunteer their time to assist with beach clean-ups in association with Clean C. We recycle a portion of all of our waste. And our staff and guests contribute to city children’s homes and upliftment projects via our unique Our Kids of the Cape Fund.

They’ re just a few examples of the many things we do daily in the practise of Responsible hoteling that are now recognised by the Fair Trade Tourism mark. And were doubly proud, because it echoes Townhouse’s own special working motto: “Dare to Care”.
