Townhouse Hotel showcases artworks by Strijdom van der Merwe

Set in the heart of Cape Town’s vibrant CBD, the Townhouse Hotel is not only everyone’s favourite business hotel – but now also a destination property for those wishing to absorb and explore local culture.

While the hotel is walking distance from The Fugard Theatre, and only a short cab ride from The Artscape and City Hall, Townhouse Hotel has further shown its commitment to local artists by introducing works by well-known South African artist and sculptor Strijdom van der Merwe to its foyer and conference area.

Guests and visitors will have the opportunity to see van der Merwe’s well-known ‘Drawing Clouds in the Karoo’ together with a selection of ‘line drawings’ displayed on the walls on the ground floor of the property.

Says General Manager of the Townhouse Hotel, Jacqui Williams, “We encourage guests to explore our local museums, galleries and theatres during their stay at the Townhouse Hotel, but are excited to now offer visitors a glimpse of Cape Town’s talent right on the premises. We hope that our relationship with Strijdom is only the beginning of a larger movement of businesses and hotels supporting local artists.”

Known as a ‘land artist’, van der Merwe uses the materials provided by his chosen site and has been described as working ‘obsessively within nature’. The van der Merwe artworks are on display at the Townhouse Hotel and open to all guests and visitors.
